Are you overwhelmed with lots of reports/notes that you have to complete reading within a short period of time?

While reading is a very good habit to develop, we don’t remember a lot of what we read after a few minutes. According to Tony Buzan, we retain only 40% of what we read within a week. “People usually forget 90 percent of what they learn in a class within 30 days and the majority of this forgetting occurs in the first few hours after the class” says John Medina, author of Brain Rules.

3 simple techniques to read and absorb the information faster is through

- Using a visual pacer — it helps to speed up reading — try using a finger, pen or pencil and run it fast as you read

- Expand your visual awareness — before reading, take 30 seconds to expand your visual awareness. You can do this by picking any point in front of you and without moving your focus from that sport, become slowly aware of the areas surrounding that spot. Advanced readers generally do not move their eyes on every word , rather they just focus on 2 spots in a line and are able to read and absorb chunks of information.

- Look for Key ideas or key words — this is something I have practiced over the years. I glance at a report and pick the key ideas , information or words that are unique/stands out/supporting or contrary arguements to the content. I note these down mentally or on a paper. I read the surrounding information quickly which gives me more clarity.

These are 3 simple techniques that can be easily learnt and it can make reading volumes of information easier.
